Mykola Pavlun was born in 1952 in the town of Berestechko in Volyn. After graduating from school (1970) he entered the Faculty of Geology of the Ivan Franko State University of Lviv, graduating in 1975. He received the qualification of “geological engineer” in specialty “Geological Survey and Exploration of Minerals”. Since then, all work has been connected with Lviv University.

1975–1978 – worked in the Central Kazakhstan group for research of molybdenum-tungsten deposits (research department of the Faculty of Geology).

1978–1981 – postgraduate studies at the Department of Search and Exploration of Mineral Deposits. He defended his dissertation in 1981 (supervisor – Prof. Ye. Lazko).

In 1982 – was elected an assistant of the same department, in 1987 – an Associate Professor.

In 1991 – was appointed Head of the Research Department of the University – First Vice-Rector for Research, and during 1992–1998 he worked as Vice-Rector of Research.

In 1996 – was elected head of the Department of Mineral Geology.

In 2003 – defended the doctoral dissertation, in 2005 – received the academic title of Professor.

During 2004–2011 and 2014–till today – Dean of the Faculty of Geology.

In 2007 – was elected an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Ukraine.
