Welcome to the website of the Faculty of Geology!

The Faculty of Geology was founded in 1945 by its first dean and rector of the University, academician Yevhen Lazarenko. Such outstanding scientists as Oleh Vialov, Yevhen Lazarenko, Volodymyr Porfyrjev, Volodymyr Selskyi, Volodymyr Sobolev, Seraphym Subbotin, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Vasyl Hlushko, Professors Davyd Horzhevskyi, Volodymyr Kozerenko, Mykola Yermakov, Dmytro Rezvoi, Danylo Bobrovnyk, Yevhen Lazko, Oleksandr Bobriyevych, Yaroslav Kulchytskyi, Aida Andreeva-Hryhorovych, Orest Matkovskyi, Albert Sivoronov, Hryhorii Hryhorchuk, Zbigniew Bartoszynski, Oleksandr Bobrov, Heorhii Rudko and others worked and studied here.

Oleh Vialov, Yevhen Lazarenko, Volodymyr Sobolev, Vasyl Yershov, Mykola Yermakov, Yevhen Lazko, Yaroslav Kulchytskyi, Orest Matkovskyi, Vasyl Hlushko (twice), and Volodymyr Pavlyshyn became laureates of the State Prizes for outstanding scientific achievements. 14 graduates of the faculty were awarded State Prizes for the discovery and exploration of world-class deposits. Yevhen Chornyi, a graduate of 1957, won this award three times.

Professors Viktor Kyryliuk, Albert Sivoronov, Orest Matkovskyi, and Mykola Pavlun became full members of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Ukraine.

Andrii Bohutskyi, currently a professor at the Faculty of Geography at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa at the Maria Skłodowska-Curie University in Lublin, Poland. He is also a member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Postgraduate students and staff of the faculty have defended 34 doctoral and 190 candidate theses in 77 years whilst graduates of the faculty have defended 63 doctoral and 187 candidate theses.

They are the ones who created the fundamental scientific and educational Lviv Geological School, which is well-known far beyond the university.

Today, the Faculty of Geology trains specialists in the following bachelor degree specialties: 103 Earth Sciences (two educational programs: Geology. Computer Technologies in Earth Sciences; Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering) and 101 Ecology (educational program: Computer Technologies in Ecology and Environmental Quality Management), and in the following master degree specialties: 103 Earth Sciences (four educational programs: Geology. Geology of Oil and Gas. Geochemistry and Mineralogy. Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology) and 101 Ecology (educational program: Environmental Management and Geotourism).

Four departments conduct specialist training and research work: mineralogy, petrography and geochemistry; general and historical geology and paleontology; geology of minerals and geophysics; environmental and engineering geology and hydrogeology.

The educational process is provided by the highly qualified staff consisting of the graduates of the faculty of different years: four doctors of sciences, professors, 20 candidates of sciences, associate professors, five assistants. The curriculum is organically balanced and covers normative (general training cycle, professional and practical training cycle) and optional (general training cycle, professional and practical training cycle) disciplines.

Students have three museums at their disposal (Mineralogical museum named after Academician Ye. Lazarenko, Paleontological museum and Museum of Ore Formations) and two computer classes. Various educational (geological, ecological, cartographic, topographic) and special industrial training ecological-geological field internships are organized for students. They are conducted on the basis of the field laboratory of ecological and geological research in Verkhnie Syniovydne of Lviv region, in the Mizun river basin, Yavoriv and Chervonohrad mining districts, Transcarpathia, central, eastern and southern regions of Ukraine on the basis of regional geological expeditions and environmental organizations. All of the above makes training of highly educated geologists and ecologists possible.

Graduates of the faculty can work in geological expeditions of industrial geological associations of the State Geological Survey of Ukraine, NJSC “Nadra Ukrainy”, in the system of environmental management of various levels, in existing quarries and mines, and in relevant environmental departments, research institutes of geological, geochemical and environmental protection of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, branch Ukrainian State Geological Exploration Institute (Kyiv), in various design and construction organizations (works within engineering-geological and hydrogeological surveys). The best graduates enter postgraduate studies at the geological faculties of universities and field-oriented institutes of geological and ecological profile of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Lviv, Kyiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Dnipro, Odesa, Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih.

We invite you to enter the Faculty of Geology of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv!
